| In today’s world, power outages have become far too common. See "What Causes Power Outages" below. With an aging electrical infrastructure, that may include rolling blackouts, emergency blackouts, or just plain electrical grid problems. Not to mention possible homeland security problems and of course Mother Nature (wind, hurricanes and tropical storms). Many homeowners simply cannot afford to ride out another power outage. Instead, they are installing home standby generators in record numbers to protect their families and investments.
Just a few years ago, the thought of owning an emergency standby generator seemed ridiculous. So living without electricity became all too common but many people are now realizing that home standby power is affordable and practical.
A standby generator is permanently installed outdoors, much like an air-conditioning unit is. The generator operates on your home's existing fuel source - whether that's natural gas or liquid propane (LP).
Smaller air-cooled models provide essential circuit protection for small to medium sized homes. With 8, 10, 14 and 17 circuit transfer switches standard in these models.
For whole-house protection or commercial applications, you can choose from:
- Generac 20 kw air-cooled with 200 Amp transfer switch,
- Large residential and commercial liquid-cooled models ranging from 22-48 kw in single phase and three phase voltages.
- GENERAC Elite commercial models ranging from 22-150 kw in single and three phase voltages.
To get accurate sizing requirements for a liquid-cooled generator, have a licensed electrician apply an amp meter to the circuits and appliances slated for backup power. A true load calculation can then be made to assure the proper generator is specified.
