Consider installing a Generac GenReady Panel.  This house panel is a 40 circuit electrical panel with a Main Breaker and Transfer Switch combined.  It allows the electrician wiring your home to place certain circuits on the generator protected side of the panel and others, which could overload a smaller unit, on the unprotected side.  This panel carries a cost approximately $200 more than a conventional panel, but if your installing a generator later on, it will save over $800 in installation costs.
